Re:       Parental Notification Under No Child Left Behind Act

Date:   July 28, 2006

If your child attends Dyersburg Primary School, Dyersburg Intermediate School, or Dyersburg Middle School, the school is a Title One schoolwide school receiving federal funds under No Child Left Behind (NCLB). This money is based on needs assessments and implemented through School Improvement Plans.  These funds under NCLB of 2001, Public Law No. 107-110 requires support of parentsŐ right-to-know about educational issues in the Dyersburg City Schools System.

As a parent, you have a right to request information regarding the professional qualifications of your childŐs classroom teacher(s) and any paraprofessional providing instructional support to your child. The Dyersburg City Schools strives to hire only highly qualified teachers and paraprofessionals.

Parental Involvement policy and plans are on file and available on request from parents.  Within the school year meetings are held to provide school program information, to answer any and all questions, and to receive parental feedback ideas and any other information from parents concerning the education of their children.  School-parent-student compacts are distributed at the beginning of the school year, which are signed, returned, and kept on file.

The Dyersburg City Schools will provide appropriate programs as needed for students with Limited English Proficiency. When a child registers for a school, a Home Language Survey is completed.  If a language other than English is spoken by the student either inside or outside the home, the school will assess the childŐs language proficiency to determine his/her eligibility for the appropriate services.  Criteria utilized to determine eligibility are on file and available upon request.

If and when there is a need, the Dyersburg City Schools System will strive to meet the educational needs of the identified homeless children and youth where possible and practical.

Due to the requirements of NCLB for systems receiving federal funds, the Dyersburg City Schools System will release information which includes, names, addresses, and phone numbers of secondary school students to all military recruiters if requested unless parents notify the high school principal in writing not to release this information.

Our system is required to inform you that as a parent you have the right to receive written notification that if your child should become the victim of a violent crime at school, he/she will have the right to transfer to another school within the school district.  Presently at this time there is no school available for transfer within the school district.

The school system shall provide any students who attends a persistently dangerous school, or any student who has been the victim of a violent crime while at school, the opportunity to attend a safe school.

We are pleased to report that there are no schools in the Dyersburg City Schools System identified for school improvement or as not meeting adequately yearly progress.  The school systemŐs report card and other assessment information are available.  Individual student state/local assessment information is sent home.  If you have any questions, you may contact Judy Hickman at (731) 286-3600 concerning further information.
